Template:West Hampstead stations West Hampstead tube station is a London Underground Jubilee line station in West Hampstead. It is on West End Lane between Broadhurst Gardens and Blackburn Road and is in Travelcard Zone 2. It lies between Kilburn and Finchley Road tube stations. It is 100m from West Hampstead station on the London Overground North London Line and 200m from West Hampstead Thameslink station.

History

The station was opened on 30 June 1879 by the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan line) when it extended its tracks from Swiss Cottage. The station acted as the temporary terminus of the branch until it was further extended to Willesden Green on 24 November 1879. On 20 November 1939 stopping services were transferred to the Bakerloo line when it took over operations on the Stanmore branch. Stopping services were transferred to the Jubilee line on 1 May 1979. Metropolitan line services run through the station without stopping, although early morning and late evening services may do so for operational convenience.

Access and interchanges

The station is not accessible by wheelchair. Facilities include an automatic ticket machine, two quick ticket machines, a ticket booth, countdown timers, a waiting room and both male and female toilets.

Most maps show the three stations as connections. Through ticketing is allowed.

Development

With three separate stations a change of line requires walking along or crossing the busy West End Lane. A 2004 proposal by Chiltern Railways was to link the three by subterranean walkways, to build new platforms for the Chiltern line and possibly for the Metropolitan line, and to relocate the Thameslink and London Overground stations to the east side of West End Lane. The redevelopment would have involved demolishing some buildings and turning West End Lane into "a tree-lined boulevard". The proposal was put on hold in 2007 due to uncertainty about the North London Line franchise.

In 2008 it was proposed that the North and West London Light Railway could serve the station.
