Newport Transport is the main provider of bus services in the city of Newport, Wales, under the brand Newport Bus. Formerly a council department, it came into being as a separate corporate entity in 1986, following the Transport Act 1985. Newport City Council is the only shareholder, which makes it one of the few remaining municipal bus companies in the country.

Operations[]

Newport's current fleet consists mainly of single-deck vehicles of Scania manufacture, most of them Omnicity low-floor. Six MAN A22/Wrightbus Meridian single deckers entered service in February 2011, after an 18 month delay. There are seven Dennis Trident 2 and five Alexander Dennis Enviro 400double-deck vehicles, along with seven ex-Lothian Buses, Volvo Olympians which are used mainly on School services. Newport Transport's midibus fleet were known as the "Newport Nipper", however this branding is no longer used. The midibus fleet is currently 8 Dennis Dart SLF/Alexander ALX200 and 18 Alexander Dennis Enviro 200's.

The original pre-war livery of maroon was changed to green and cream in the 1940s and remained the same until August 2009. The livery is slowly being changed to dark green and white with lime green and grey logos at the rear of the vehicles although there are a few exceptions: The company runs seven high-quality large-capacity school coaches branded as "Skool Coach" that are painted in all-over yellow, mimicking those used in North America, these being Scania/Irizar (S-kool. In the summer months, Newport Transport also operate the red-liveried open-top bus tour of the city under the City Sightseeing branding using a converted Scania N113DRB/Alexander double decker.

Like Cardiff Bus, the company operates an exact-fare policy on its routes and has abolished return tickets, now giving a choice of either single ticket or day rover (which provides unlimited travel for a day on all Newport Transport buses).

The company currently employs 230 staff and is based on Corporation Road. As the company operates at "arms length" from the council, it competes with other local operators for local-authority-tendered bus services.
