London Buses route 62 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to East London.
History[]
The route once ran from Little Heath to Ilford via Goodmayes, Barking, Ripple Road, Becontree, Chadwell Heath, Hainault, Barkingside and Gants Hill, making it a long route. When Barking Hospital was opened in the 1960s, the route was withdrawn between Ripple Road and Little Heath and diverted along Upney Lane to Barking to serve the new hospital. Throughout the years there has been many different terminals Ilford, Gants Hill, Barkingside, Hainault all being the extent of the service at some point. Also on Summer Sundays to Chigwell Row, during the 1960s Route Number was 62A. The service was won by Ensignbus in the late 1980s but went back to East London by the beginning of the 1990s and has stayed there since. The service today operates between Marks Gate to Barking Gascoigne Estate.
This route was the very last to use the RT bus in London in 1979 due to the need to widen the bridge at Chadwell Heath Railway Station before newer models could be used. The RT was replaced by the Leyland Titan after the bridge was widened.
A new contract in 2001 saw the introduction of low floor Dennis Dart SLF Alexander ALX200s, in Stagecoach London livery, although double deckers in the form of Alexander ALX 400s also put in regular appearances too.
The route will be retained by Stagecoach London from 29 April 2023.
