There are many Transport for London contracted buses in London, United Kingdom, which operate primarily to serve school children. These buses are usually numbered between 600 - 699 and only run on days when the school which they serve is open. These buses also usually only have between one and three journeys in each direction per day.

Trolleybuses, which ran in London from 1931 to 1962, had 3-digit route numbers between 500 and 699, and these included some of the current route numbers used for school buses.[1][2]

London Buses route 603 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London. The service is contracted to Metroline.

History [3]

The route was introduced in 2004 mainly as a route to link the main residential areas of Muswell Hill and Highgate with Hampstead, where there are many schools which children go to. The 603 provides a major link between Highgate Village and Muswell Hill which is not available directly without a bus change or a 10 minute walk. Unlike most school bus routes, the 603 also runs during school holidays (though not on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. )

To travel on this route would require you to take route 102/234 to East Finchley then to take a 143 to Highgate Village, then a 210 to Whitestone Pond (top of Hampstead) then a 268 to Swiss Cottage. This route has been earmarked before for full time operation, not just a peak hour route.

The service is not renowned for its reliability as the buses run empty from Holloway to Muswell Hill and this stretch usually has congestion and then the route runs over roads that are variable for traffic in peak hours because of school run cars. The problem with it being so unreliable is that people use the bus as their only method of transport to school and being late is usually out of the question.[citation needed]

The second bus is usually used to get to Highgate Village where most passengers alight, because it is the only link from Muswell Hill to there, the first bus is used mainly for travel to Hampstead though.

The double deck service also provides relief for the 143 over the route to Highgate Village which is heavily used, especially by school children.

The bus is a crucial link for school children and commuters; the level of usage justifies its existence.

London Buses route 616 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London. The service is contracted to Go-Ahead London.

History

The route was created to provide students of The Latymer School with an alternative route to Southgate and Palmers Green without having to use the very crowded W6. The route operates four buses per day, two in the morning which go to Edmonton Green, and two in the afternoon which go to Winchmore Hill. The service changes slightly on a Friday, to reflect Friday's forty minute early closure for year sevens and eights of the Latymer School. No service is run on Bank Holidays, School Holidays or weekends. On days when the school closes early, an amended service is run.

Although the bus service was created for Latymer School students, students of other schools often use the bus, mainly beyond Southgate.

On 31 March 2012, route 616 was transferred to Go-Ahead London. [5]
